Waxed Canvas Tote

$125.00

Waxed canvas was the traditional material for sailors due to its incredible durability, water resistance and ability to catch the wind better than unwaxed canvas. Our Maine-made totes are carefully constructed with a canvas coated in premium beeswax, making them stiffer than the more common paraffin-coated canvas.

Because of its wax coating, this canvas will develop a beautiful patina over time as it is folded, scratched or scuffed. This means you will be able to see the marks made in the fabric as they will appear lighter than the original fabric color, creating a rich, rugged look. Like a full grain leather, waxed canvas looks better with age and wear.

Our bags include a full lining and a large interior pocket. The handles are fashioned from premium bridle leather, and brass rivets secure them to the tote.

Totes are 13.5” tall x 13” wide and 5” deep.

Made to order in Camden, Maine. Please allow two weeks for manufacture.

Our History

While technically founded in 1858, this hand painted sign dug up from the archives shows that the company was actually doing business two years before that. Either way, we're still the second oldest manufacturer of marine products in the United States today.

From our simple workshop on the banks of the Penobscot River, we still employ time-honored manufacturing traditions. Here, a long time Shaw & Tenney craftsman sculpts an oar on a drum sander that’s more than 100 years old.

Our oars and paddles are all made to order right here, in our Orono, Maine workshop. Meticulously hand sewing oar leathers takes years (and years) of practice.

We’ve been dipping our paddles the same way for over 100 years. Of course there are probably easier ways to do it, but we’re convinced there’s no better.
