Northern Forest Canoe Trail

$356.00

When you hear the word “trail,” you probably don’t think of water. But in the Northeast, where water was once the primary means of travel, especially for Native Americans and early traders, the word “trail” works just fine. Today, we’re paying homage to this paddling way of life by painting our Penobscot paddle with the colors of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, a non-profit organization devoted to maintaining a historic 740-mile inland paddling trail that crosses from upstate New York to Maine – with a jaunt into Quebec. Made from distinctive and strong curly maple, our Penobscot paddle offers a traditional pear grip and beavertail blade. Our most popular paddle for the water, this version might just be as useful hanging on your wall as a piece of art. Shaw & Tenney is proud to make a donation to the Northern Forest Canoe Trail from the proceeds of each NFCT paddle sold.

Our History

While technically founded in 1858, this hand painted sign dug up from the archives shows that the company was actually doing business two years before that. Either way, we're still the second oldest manufacturer of marine products in the United States today.

From our simple workshop on the banks of the Penobscot River, we still employ time-honored manufacturing traditions. Here, a long time Shaw & Tenney craftsman sculpts an oar on a drum sander that’s more than 100 years old.

Our oars and paddles are all made to order right here, in our Orono, Maine workshop. Meticulously hand sewing oar leathers takes years (and years) of practice.

We’ve been dipping our paddles the same way for over 100 years. Of course there are probably easier ways to do it, but we’re convinced there’s no better.
