Handmade Wooden Flag Poles

We are proud to offer traditional wooden flagpoles and yardarms, crafted with the same uncompromising quality and attention to detail that have defined Shaw and Tenney since 1858. Built by hand using time-honored techniques, each pole is made from the finest materials—select Eastern red spruce for poles up to 26 feet, prized for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, and clear vertical grain Douglas fir for flagpoles 28 feet and taller. Our flagpoles have been chosen for historic restorations, private estates, and even featured in the film Lincoln—a testament to their enduring craftsmanship and timeless appeal.

Unlike aluminum or fiberglass, a Shaw and Tenney wooden flagpole offers quiet dignity and refined beauty—built to complement the style and character of your home or property. When choosing the right size, consider the following:

  • Shorter Flagpoles (15' to 20'): Ideal for single-story homes, tighter landscapes, or areas with tree cover or overhead lines. A shorter pole offers a more understated presence and is easier to install and maintain.

  • Midsize Flagpoles (20'–24'): Well-suited for two-story homes, open yards, or properties where a commanding presence is desired. Midsize poles offer more visual impact, especially when flying a larger flag or when visibility from a distance matters.

  • Larger Flagpoles (27' and taller): Best suited for large estates, commercial properties, or open landscapes where greater height creates a commanding presence and ensures visibility from a distance. These poles make a bold, architectural statement and are often chosen for civic buildings, clubs, or prominent private residences.

  • Proportions: A general guideline is to match the flagpole height to the roofline of a home, or just a few feet taller. You do not want one to overpower the other.

  • Aesthetic Preference: Some homeowners favor a modest, classic look; others prefer a bold statement—there’s no wrong choice, only the impression you want to make.

Every flagpole and yardarm is custom-built to your specifications, and we offer a range of traditional styles to suit your setting. Please contact us to discuss your needs—we’re happy to provide a quote. We ship throughout the continental U.S., to Canada, and beyond. While we do not offer installation, the process is straightforward and can be easily handled by a local contractor.

Anatomy of a Wooden Flagpole

Flagpole: Starting with native spruce or douglas fir, we laminate and scarf-joint timbers together. Our poles feature a square base at least three feet high, and are then rounded and tapered to a two to three inch diameter at the top. We offer flagpoles in standard heights of 15’, 18’, 20’, 24’, 27’, and 35’. We can finish your flagpole in either marine paint or varnish.

Truck: The external truck sits at the top of each flagpole, providing an exposed pulley and rope system for raising and lowering the flag. All trucks are designed to accept balls, eagles and finials. The provided three inch external stationary truck is durable cast aluminum with a cast nylon sheave on a 1/4" aluminum axle. Powder coated finish.

Halyard: The line that holds your flag.

Cleat: Made from silicon bronze and secured to the pole on site. These are as rugged and handsome as they are functional.

Finial: Due to the various options available on the internet, we do not supply a finial. The truck we supply has a standard 1/2" 13 NC thread to accept most finials.

Tabernacle: Made from powder coated A36 steel and white ash. The steel is 96” tall, with 48” designed to be mounted in freshly poured concrete. The flagpole is secured to the tabernacle with three bolts. Remove the top and bottom bolt, and your pole is easily raised and lowered on the remaining bolt.

Yardarm: Horizontal cross-member mounted ⅔’s of the way up a flagpole. Popular in nautical settings, they allow display of multiple flags on the same pole.

Our History

While technically founded in 1858, this hand painted sign dug up from the archives shows that the company was actually doing business two years before that. Either way, we're still the second oldest manufacturer of marine products in the United States today.

From our simple workshop on the banks of the Penobscot River, we still employ time-honored manufacturing traditions. Here, a long time Shaw & Tenney craftsman sculpts an oar on a drum sander that’s more than 100 years old.

Our oars and paddles are all made to order right here, in our Orono, Maine workshop. Meticulously hand sewing oar leathers takes years (and years) of practice.

We’ve been dipping our paddles the same way for over 100 years. Of course there are probably easier ways to do it, but we’re convinced there’s no better.
