The Allagash

$356.00

To celebrate the Allagash Wilderness Waterway’s 50th Anniversary in 2016 we are proud to introduce The Allagash as our first River Series paddle.

The 92-mile Allagash Wilderness Waterway in northern Maine is one of America's preeminent canoe trips. Established by the Maine State Legislature in 1966 and designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1970 as the first state-administered component of the National Wild and Scenic River System, the Allagash is what wilderness paddling is about.

An intricate hand drawn map of the Waterway by our own Sam Martinelli (General Manager and paddler extraordinaire) is engraved on the blade of our handcrafted ash beavertail blade. Maine Ash is the quintessential wood for canoe paddles, tough, durable, with a great flex. The custom elongated grip makes it perfect for tripping.

While most of these paddles will likely be displayed, they are made to be used. Henry David Thoreau canoed the Allagash twice and wrote The Maine Woods – likely with a Shaw & Tenney paddle in his hands.

Our History

While technically founded in 1858, this hand painted sign dug up from the archives shows that the company was actually doing business two years before that. Either way, we're still the second oldest manufacturer of marine products in the United States today.

From our simple workshop on the banks of the Penobscot River, we still employ time-honored manufacturing traditions. Here, a long time Shaw & Tenney craftsman sculpts an oar on a drum sander that’s more than 100 years old.

Our oars and paddles are all made to order right here, in our Orono, Maine workshop. Meticulously hand sewing oar leathers takes years (and years) of practice.

We’ve been dipping our paddles the same way for over 100 years. Of course there are probably easier ways to do it, but we’re convinced there’s no better.
