Built in New Bedford, MA in 1841, The Charles W. Morgan represents the last of the great, wooden whaleships that once roamed the seas. (The USS Constitution is the only older commercial ship still afloat.) After a painstaking 4-year restoration at Mystic Seaport, the Charles W. Morgan took its first voyage since 1921 -- an eight-day celebration along the eastern seaboard. Shaw & Tenney supported the restoration efforts by producing eight sets of clear spruce oars for the ship's, newly constructed, but no less authentic, Beetle Whaleboats. Light enough for young rowers, each 28' whaleboat has two 15’, two 16’, and one 17’ rowing oar each manned by one rower, as well as a massive, 21’ steering oar. We're proud of our involvement in the Charles W. Morgan restoration project, and wish her fair winds and following seas.
