As you probably know, we love crafting unique projects for our customers. This year, we’ve once again been asked to create the Seine Boat rowing oars for the St. Peter’s Fiesta in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Since 1927, the Italian American community of Gloucester has hosted an annual five-day festival to honor the patron saint of the fisherman St. Peter. There are a variety of events at the festival, but the highlight is always the boat races. In the different Seine Boat Races, the US Coast Guard rows against the US Navy, the Gloucester Fire Department competes with the Gloucester Police Department, and there’s even an all-women’s league. Twelve member crews man three boats—the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Each must row a half-mile, turn around, and row back to shore. The top two finishers then go against last year’s defending champions.
For this year’s celebration, we’re applying our meticulous craftsmanship to make 15 12’ ash rowing oars to be used in the Seine Boat Races. As a company rich in history, Shaw & Tenney is proud to continue supporting an event that values tradition as much as we do.
If you’d like to see how we’re making these oars, please follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We’ll update you with the progress of the oars until we arrive at the finished product.
